A brake is a system: the lever, the cable or hose, the brake itself and the surface it works against. We inspect the parts together, looking at wear, movement and alignment.

What the work can include

  • Inspecting brake pads and the rim or rotor surface
  • Checking cable movement, housing and lever feel
  • Adjusting pad position and brake alignment
  • Replacing worn components where agreed

Hydraulic work depends on the brake system and the service it needs. We identify that at inspection rather than assuming every brake needs the same treatment.

A rough shift can involve more than one part.

Find the cause
of the rough shift.

A gear that skips under pressure may need more than a cable adjustment. Chain wear, cassette condition, cable friction and alignment all affect the way a bike shifts.

We inspect the drivetrain, then set out the adjustment or replacement work. If several parts have worn together, we explain the options as a complete system.

Useful things to tell us

  • Which gear or part of the range is affected
  • Whether the problem happens on a climb or while pedalling gently
  • Any recent fall, transport damage or change of components
  • When the chain or cassette was last replaced, if known

“It clicks when I push hard” is a useful description. You do not need a diagnosis before you visit. Describe what the bike does and when it happens.

If braking has changed suddenly, a wheel is loose or the bike has structural damage, leave it off the road until it has been assessed. Do not ride to the workshop to demonstrate the problem.
