Visual art
Drawing, painting, collage and three-dimensional work build a vocabulary of materials and techniques. Students look at examples, try an approach and talk about the choices in their own work.
Arts at Westhaven
An idea can be heard,
seen or performed.
Art and music are regular subjects. Students learn techniques, spend time making work and share it with an audience.
Music
Singing, listening, rhythm and instrumental work develop through the grades. Rehearsal teaches attention to one part and to the sound of the whole group.
Performance
Class sharing, staged scenes and school performances offer opportunities to speak, move, rehearse and work behind the scenes. Participation includes making the event possible as well as appearing in it.
Studio time
Keep the work open long enough.
A studio lesson gives students time to try a material and return to a piece. Work is displayed with discussion of the choices behind it. A finished piece may be part of a class exhibition, while a sketchbook keeps the earlier thinking visible.
