Rosemary grows best in full sun with free-draining soil. A pot needs drainage holes, and the roots should not sit in waterlogged compost.
Containers can dry quickly in warm weather, so they need attention even when a plant is drought tolerant in the ground. Severe cold and wet winter conditions can also affect rosemary.

Leave room for roots and drainage.
The RHS recommends a rosemary container at least 30cm wide and deep, with plenty of drainage holes. The size and material of a pot influence how quickly its compost dries.
