Check the soil before watering.

The amount of water a container holds and loses depends on its size, material, location and the plant. A hot outdoor pot can behave differently from an indoor one. Avoid treating all plants as if they need the same weekly dose.

Check the care notes for your plant and pay attention to how quickly its pot dries at home.

Know where excess water goes.

A growing pot needs a way for excess water to leave. If it sits inside a decorative outer pot, check what collects below it. Waterlogged growing medium is different from a pot that has drained after watering.

Make a useful note of a change.

If a plant changes, note what changed around it too: a new position, a weather shift, a different watering pattern or a recent repot. Keep the description specific rather than guessing a cause from one leaf.
