A short passage
The stool had one loose joint and three perfectly good legs. It was tempting to call that a failure of the whole thing. On the bench, taken apart, it became a different proposition: a short length of timber, a patient fit, a choice about how much of the old surface to leave. Repair began when the object stopped being a problem and became a set of parts again.
