Small experiments

TRY ONE CHANGE.
KNOW WHEN TO REVIEW IT.

Try a small change in the work and review what happens before extending it to the whole team.

The proposal

STATE THE CHANGE IN PLAIN LANGUAGE.

Describe the point in the workflow, the change being proposed and what the team expects to see. Name the person coordinating the trial and the people whose work is affected.

A change might be a clearer intake question, a named decision owner or a revised handoff note. The scope should be small enough to understand what happened.

The trial

KEEP THE WORK VISIBLE.

Use the new arrangement on the agreed work and record relevant observations. Notice what the team still has to work around, which questions recur and whether new difficulties appear elsewhere.

Record enough detail to judge whether the change helped and what still needs attention.

The review

KEEP, ADJUST OR STOP.

Compare the team’s experience with the expectation stated at the start. Decide whether to keep the change, adjust it or stop. Record the reason so the next experiment starts with that context.
