COVESailing school

First sail

A first turn
at the helm.

You can arrive without knowing a sheet from a halyard. This course begins with the boat and introduces the tasks you will try aboard.

What the session covers

At the dock

Meet the crew, fit the provided safety equipment and learn where to sit, stand and move. The instructor explains the plan before departure.

Underway

Try steering and notice how the boat responds. Meet the sail controls as part of the session rather than memorising a list ashore.

With the crew

Take part in simple crew tasks under instruction. Clear calls and listening are part of the practice.

Back alongside

Review what you tried and what you would like to do again. A next course depends on your experience and interests.

The water sets part of the plan.

The instructor decides which exercises suit the conditions and the crew. The outline describes the learning focus; it is not a promise that every task will be completed in one session.
